Association board orientation and onboarding are crucial for integrating new members and setting them up to optimize their engagement and contribution.
Typically, an orientation would include an overview of the association’s mission, vision, values, history, strategic plan, and current challenges. The orientation would also include an overview of the association’s governing documents, as well as the board’s responsibilities, fiduciary roles and code of conduct. Other aspects include an introduction to staff structure and leadership and a review of the organization’s budget and key financial reports.
To be effective, orientation should be part of board member development and an on-going, not one time, process. Many organizations have moved to provide hybrid formats to help optimize board member time. Some have developed board handbooks that serve as a resource for new directors. Many also assign a “board buddy” to help new members navigate their first few meetings.
Associations should seek input from board members on design of their orientation programs including feedback on their effectiveness.
